Trump pledges to address Russian threat in Greenland
“NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that 'you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” Trump said on the social media platform Truth Social.
The announcement follows a phone call on Sunday between Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, in which they discussed the security situation in Greenland and the wider Arctic. Rutte stated that both parties “will continue to working on this,” and added, “I look forward to seeing him (Trump) in Davos later this week.”
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn longstanding US attention due to its strategic location, extensive mineral resources, and concerns about alleged Russian and Chinese activity.
On Saturday, Trump unveiled plans to impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight European nations—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—starting Feb. 1, rising to 25% in June, in response to their opposition to US ambitions in Greenland.
In response, the eight countries released a joint statement on Sunday condemning the US threat and reaffirming their commitment to Arctic security.
The Kremlin also weighed in last week, confirming Greenland’s legal status as part of Denmark and calling the situation “very controversial.” “We proceed from the understanding that Greenland is a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
